Slowly start with one room at a time. Get rid of any excess that doesn't belong to that room. Throw away anything that you don't need. Let's face it don't even bother of thinking I'll need it later if you haven't touch the stuff in so many months you don't need it. If you see things that you really don't need but paid money for it so you'll want to keep it - don't. You can donate these items and will feel good that you've done something great. Someone will find benefits from it thanks to you. Your goal is to minimize and start living organized. Don't limit yourself to just clothes, magazines, old art work that you did when you were in 3rd grade or old shoes. Check for any items that are just lying there with no purpose including furniture. Don't give in get some garbage bag and start hauling stuff that just gets in a way.

After you organized a certain room in your house, go ahead and give it a good cleaning. Wipe off dust, wash the sheets (if it is a bedroom), vacuum and rearrange the furniture that will showcase the space. You will be surprised how great it feels when you get done and will want to get motivated to move to the next room. Keep a garbage can in every room so that you will not be tempted to just lay things on furniture or anywhere (used Kleenex yuck, junk mails, etc.). I loved the way an organized house make me feel being in the midst of it. I noticed that after all the hustle and bustle I've been through at work and traffic I right away feel calmer as I enter my house. Your house is your sanctuary and keeping your house organized will keep this purpose.
